- Preclinical model studies and clinical field trials in horses demonstrate that analgesic effects are seen within 15 minutes following injection and persist for approximately four hours.
- Original synthetic, centrally acting, narcotic agonist-antagonist analgesic with potent antitussive activity.
- Butorphanol has been demonstrated to be four times more potent than morphine.

- The cardiopulmonary effects of butorphanol are not distinctly dosage-related but reach a ceiling effect beyond which further dosage increases resulting in relatively lesser side effects.

- Administer 5 mL of TORBUGESIC for each 1,000 pounds of body weight by intravenous injection.
  - This is equivalent to 0.1 mg of butorphanol per kilogram of body weight (0.05 mg/lb.).
- The dose may be repeated within three to four hours but treatment should not exceed 48 hours.
